Does my child have a problem?
When
you, as your child's parent, are concerned that there might
be a problem, there usually is a problem. There are proven ways
to diagnose and then deal with the problem - the sooner the
better. The best way to get started is to call
or email
us to discuss your situation, and then to make an appointment
for an evaluation. See What
are speech and language disorders?
The Center
for Speech, Language and Occupational Therapy in Los Altos,
Fremont, and San Jose, CA offers treatment and hope to children
who have communication, movement, and sensory integration
disorders. The Center relies on referrals from pediatricians
and prior clients. Parents initiate the process with a phone
call and schedule an intake interview in which
the therapist collects a history, discusses

evaluation procedures,
and explains treatment options. The child is then evaluated
through formal testing, observation, and speech and language
samples. Diagnosis of speech, language, movement, and/or sensory
integration deficits is often secondary to other issues such
as developmental delays, cognitive limitations, or pervasive
developmental disorders, including autism.

Treatments
- Early
Intervention Clinics
were developed for children considered "at risk"
for language disorders. These clinics address developmental
issues in infants and preschoolers. Approximately 75%
of language is developed by age 4, so it is important
to act quickly if you suspect that your child has a
problem. Pediatricians may advise parents to wait until
the child is older, but this can mean more difficult
treatment later.
- Fast
ForWord
is a computer generated, on-line auditory training program
for children with auditory processing disorders. Not
every problem is evident when the parent listens to
the child speak. Often, poor readers may have started
out as poor listeners. Fast Forward programs help children
learn to listen to the speech sounds of the language.
- Social/Pragmatic
Groups
are offered to the child who may not be comfortable
in social situations. These groups help children communicate
with their peers.
- The
Hanen Program
for parents at the Center for Speech, Language, and
Occupational Therapy, Inc. is a training program that
provides family-focused early language intervention.
-
Individual
Treatment
- The
decision to provide treatment on an individual basis
is made following the evaluation. Typically, children
are seen individually when they do not require skill-building
in the area of social interaction, or when group inclusion
is not possible due to behavior. Individual treatment
may prepare a child for later inclusion in a group.
Both children and adults may require individual treatment
based on the nature of the presenting problem, which
may require in-depth, focused and intensive treatment.
